The Queyras is a peaceful and stunning region in the southern Alps, nestled between the towering, rugged peaks of the Écrins National Park and the wild Occitan valleys of Italy. Its untouched, natural landscapes offer a striking contrast to the more developed areas of the French Alps further north, making it a hidden gem for those who cherish breathtaking scenery, pristine flora and fauna, and adventurous biking in remote mountain settings.
As a mountain biking destination, the Queyras is nothing short of paradise. Endless singletrack trails weave throughout the region, guiding riders from lofty passes and rocky summits down into the deep, tranquil valleys below, on flowy trails lined with beautiful larch trees. Accessible roads and tracks facilitate the use of shuttles, easing the burden of climbs and optimising the balance between ascent and descent. Coupled with some hike-a-bike sections, we can explore trails descending from close to 3,000 meters in elevation.
While many French riders hold the Queyras close to their hearts, it remains relatively undiscovered by those from overseas. We have been exploring this remarkable area for over a decade, initially introduced through Julia’s guiding work alongside Ash Smith (of Trans-Provence and Stone King Rally). Countless days and weeks spent uncovering its full potential have now firmly established the Queyras as one of our favourite mountain bike destinations worldwide!
After several years incorporating the region into our Hautes-Alpes Enduro Safari, requests grew from riders wanting to return and immerse themselves more deeply in this exceptional landscape, preferring a centre-based experience rather than the usual point-to-point format of our trips. This inspired the creation of our dedicated Queyras trip, which has steadily gained popularity year after year.
Once you ride here, we guarantee you’ll understand how it’s easy to be enchanted by the magic of this extraordinary place!
Trip Information
Our accommodation for the trip is a fantastic and well-equipped hotel nestled in a small village at the foot of the legendary Col de l’Izoard. Scenically situated with stunning mountains all around, a sunny and spacious garden area perfect for post-ride drinks and relaxing, as well as a pool and sauna/jacuzzi, it’s the perfect base for the week.
The hosts Arnaud and Claire are wonderfully friendly and welcoming, and the food is exceptional. Breakfasts are hearty and there are great storage and bike-wash facilities.
Each room is comfortable, spacious and ensuite, there’s a cosy bar and lounge area, and we think it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind after long days in the mountains.
The hotel is perfectly situated, allowing us to access a different area for riding each day, all within a relatively short drive, minimising travel time and maximising time on the trails. There are also several days where we’ll ride directly from, or back to, the hotel
We spend 6 days riding, exploring each day in a different direction from our base. There will generally be two guides on your trip, who will alternate with one guiding and one driving each day. The driver and private minibus and trailer will act as a support vehicle each day, shuttling us between trails as needed, and meeting us to provide lunch and snacks.
The variety of riding here is huge, and we try to sample as many of the best trails as possible. There are certain key trails which we try to always include, but also a large degree of flexibility meaning we can select trails which best suit the weather, group ability and fitness/fatigue levels. This means we don’t have a set itinerary for each day, but rather tailor the day and the trails as we go.
In order to reach the best trails in the area, we need to climb a little more under our own steam than during the Hautes-Alpes Enduro Safari. This means between 700-1000m climbing a day, some of which is pedalling, but also a significant amount of pushing and hike-a-bike. We promise you it’s worth it! As a result we’ll gain access to unbelievably good trails, and long-flowing descents where you’ll have forgotten the effort of the climb by the time you reach the bottom!
For those who wish to take a rest day, the hotel is in the perfect place to relax with great views, walks in the surrounding mountains, or the option to enjoy the pool and wellbeing facilities. There is no scheduled rest day during the trip but several guests opt to take one mid-week.
