We created this course in response to the many enquiries we receive from riders who are curious about our alpine trips but aren’t quite sure if they’re ready to take the leap. For those who have never ridden in the Alps, it can feel like a big step into the unknown, while others question whether they have the fitness for long climbs or the technical skills for sustained descents. We also hear from previous guests who simply don’t get the chance to ride regularly in the UK and want a structured way to rebuild confidence before a big trip.

This weekend is designed to bridge that gap—offering supportive coaching, real-world terrain, and the opportunity to develop both the physical endurance and technical ability needed for alpine riding, all in a welcoming and encouraging environment.

The Tweed Valley is a mountain bike mecca, and the ideal destination for our weekend. Offering a perfect blend of challenging terrain, progressive trails, and breathtaking natural scenery, the forests within the valley provide everything from flowing singletrack to steep, technical descents, allowing us as riders to build confidence and refine essential skills like line choice, cornering, and bike handling in a controlled yet varied environment.

Our base in the middle of the valley provides easy rideable access to the trails each day, meaning we can maximise time on the bike, while the surrounding hills mirror many of the demands of alpine riding without the extreme altitude. Combined with a welcoming riding community, a constantly growing trail network, and excellent local amenities including bike shops and cafes, it’s a highly effective training ground to prepare for bigger mountain adventures.

Trip Information

Our accommodation for the trip is a large private house nestled in a beautiful and peaceful location at the foot of Glentress forest. Each of the twin rooms is comfortable and spacious, and with a cosy lounge space, large dining area and extensive outdoor space, as well as great storage and washing facilities for our bikes, it’s a great spot which we’re happy to have found.

Our chef will cater for us with delicious breakfasts, post-ride afternoon tea and cake, and hearty 3 course dinners, all making use of local products. We’ll prepare sandwiches and snacks to take with us on the trails each day for lunch, and where route plans allow, there should be the option to stop for mid-ride coffee, or a post-ride drink.

Arrival will be from 18.30 on Thursday evening, and we’ll provide dinner for those who can make it for 19.30 (as well as keeping portions for those who might be travelling from further afield and arriving late!).

We’ll ride Friday to Sunday, heading out each day from the door to a different part of the valley. Part of the day will generally be coaching of key skills, and part will be guided ride to put into practice things learnt, as well as build up fitness for longer alpine days and get used to longer descents. Topics covered will include (but are not limited to):

  • Techniques for riding steeper terrain, navigating switchbacks, and optimising braking while riding rocky natural trails

  • Building confidence and improving balance and body position on steeper terrain

  • Nutrition strategies for long days and fitness building tips pre-trip

  • Bike setup for alpine conditions (suspension, tyres, brakes, gearing)

  • Pacing for long alpine days on multi-day trips

  • Basic trailside repairs and mechanical awareness including bike checks

  • Decision making on remote/technical terrain and recognising personal limits
